Considering a New Career? The Skilled Trades

Shelley Maley Shares

If you’re thinking about a new career path, now is one of the best times to consider the skilled trades, an industry facing one of the biggest worker shortages in decades. With the aging workforce and many skilled trades people retiring, the demand for skilled workers is exploding. In fact, some trades (such as welders, electricians, plumbers, and elevator installers) are projecting growth rates up to 60%!

Now if you’re in the Gen X or GenY populations, you may be thinking “I’m too old for a skilled trade”. However, according to a 2022 survey by PeopleReady, “only about 9% of new entrants are aged 19-24, indicating a trend toward career changers rather than direct-from-high-school hires”.

What are the many benefits of a career in the trades?

Financial: You earn money at the same time you’re learning new skills. As an added bonus, some employers even fund your training, which results in little to no student debt.

Benefits: Many positions offer union benefits, such as pension, health insurance, and paid time off.

Short Learning Curve: Most skilled tradesmen are certified or licensed in two years or less.

Job Security and Stability: Most (if not all) work cannot be replaced by AI. In addition, the skilled trades offer stable, well-paid employment. How many employers can offer that type of job assurance?

Career Growth: You can advance into an area of specialty and/or start your own related business.

Equal Opportunity: People from all socio-economic backgrounds can attain work that offers financial stability. In fact, women now make up 14% of all apprentices.

A career in the skilled trades isn’t just a job change, it’s a career reinvention. For professionals ready to trade office cubicles for real-world impact, the trades offer a chance to build something tangible, gain financial independence, and rediscover pride in your work. Whether you’re looking for greater stability, a new challenge, or simply a more meaningful way to use your talents, the path forward might just be hands-on. It’s never too late to learn, build, and thrive in a career that truly lasts.
