Digging Into Wellness: How Gardening (and a Little Yard Work) Boosts Your Body & Mind

Ever notice how pulling weeds or pruning roses can leave you weirdly satisfied? Gardening has always been a feel-good hobby, and lately it’s become my favorite form of exercise.  It’s just how I like it, no gym membership required, and I can wear whatever I want!

A Workout Hiding in Your Backyard (or Balcony)

The best part about gardening and yard work? It’s an exercise in disguise. When you’re digging, raking, hauling bags of mulch, or planting new flowers, you’re getting your heart rate up, building strength, and boosting mobility. No need to count reps!  Studies show that 30 minutes of moderate yard work can rival a brisk walk. Bonus, it’s a great way to spend time with family, and there’s usually a snack break involved (thank you, fresh tomatoes).

Don’t have a backyard or time for a full garden? No problem. A Tower Garden lets you grow veggies, herbs, and even strawberries, inside or outside. And, you’ll have a little less dirt under your nails. (Well, maybe just a little.)

Weeding Out Stress, Planting Good Habits

Let’s be honest, none of us needs more stress. Here’s where gardening becomes self-care for your mind. There’s something powerful about physically pulling out weeds and trimming away what’s not serving your plants. Each weed you remove is like saying goodbye to nagging worries, negative thoughts, or habits that don’t help you bloom.

Think of your mind as your most important garden. Pruning away negative self-talk or stressful clutter makes space for good things such as positivity, gratitude, and new ideas to take root and flourish.

Just like creating small, healthy habits can grow into big, well-being wins over time, when you plant new seeds, you’re not just hoping for veggies, you’re setting intentions for the season.

Tower Garden: The No-Excuses Way to Grow Goodness

Not everyone has space for raised beds or the energy for yard work after a long day. That’s why I’m obsessed with the Tower Garden. It’s a vertical, aeroponic, hydroponic, soil-free system that fits on a balcony, small porch, dining room or even in your kitchen. Remember when I said I still get dirty nails? LOL don’t ask!. With Tower Garden, you get all the health and all the mental clarity that comes from nurturing living things, no matter your space or schedule.

Plus, research shows kids who use Tower Gardens in school are more curious about veggies and actually eat more plants. Proof that even tiny gardens can plant big changes in our lives!

Your Action Step: Grab the Gloves, Ditch the Perfection

So, whether you’re knee-deep in weeds, admiring lettuces in your Tower Garden, or just daydreaming about starting a plant or two, remember that every little bit counts. Pull a weed, plant a seed, prune away what isn’t serving you, outside and in.

What’s one “weed” you’d like to pull from your mental garden this season? What’s a positive habit or intention you want to plant instead? Let’s connect and swap stories!

Healthy living isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress, play, and a little dirt under your nails. You’ve got this. PS, If anyone would like to contribute to my gardening gloves fund, I’ve constantly got holes in them, so please send them over!
