When someone asks, “What motivates you at your core?”, could you confidently respond? This question is really about what inspires you each day—your underlying purpose, beliefs, and values. Essentially, it’s what influences your daily choices and actions.
For me, my purpose is deeply rooted in personal workplace struggles—enduring toxic leadership, grappling with burnout, overwhelming stress, and a lack of work/life balance. Maybe you recognize these challenges, too.
Although these experiences took a toll on my health, they also led to an epiphany:
I never wanted anyone else to feel as lost, hopeless, or uncertain as I did during those difficult times in my career.
That is the reason I created Dreamcatcher Career Coaching.
Why Knowing Your Purpose Matters
Understanding your “why” does more than just motivate you—it helps build resilience, strengthens connections with others, and guides your choices, even when things are tough. Your “why” becomes a compass, keeping you focused and driven through both challenges and opportunities.
Reflection Questions to Guide You
As 2025 comes to a close, this is a perfect moment to reassess and discover your own purpose. Consider these prompts:
- What past experiences brought you joy or pride?
- What are your natural strengths and talents?
- If you could launch a side project or passion initiative, what would it be?
- Which activities make you lose track of time?
- What kind of impact or legacy do you hope to leave?
- How would you spend your days if money were no object?
Crafting Your Purpose Statement
After some honest reflection, try writing your own purpose (“why”) statement. To get started, use this simple format:
“To ______ so that ______.”
Mine, for example, is: “To coach people feeling stuck in their careers, so that no one feels as hopeless and confused as I once did.”
An Inspiring Thought
Simon Sinek puts it best:
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
Take a few minutes to explore your own “why”—it may be the most empowering action you take all year.
