Can’t make it to Pearly Baker’s Alehouse on the 14th? My goal is to raise more than $1,000!! Consider donating to support Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley at: https://secure.givelively.org/…/beards-for…/seth-rubin-0
Each October, we raise money for local cancer patients by auctioning off beards! All proceeds benefit the Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
The What & How:
Our participants are gathered up just before we start the event and arranged by beard length from shortest to longest. That becomes the order in which your beard is auctioned.
One by one, you take the stage and are auctioned off. Highest bidder wins the right to shave your face right on stage! Of course, if they are not comfortable doing so, we have professionals from local salons on hand to assist.
We encourage participants to bring some family and friends to bid. Some participants even start crowdfunding pages PRIOR to the event in an effort to raise as much as possible for the cause (not required- totally up to you). In the past, some people have even started bids to “keep” the beards- we aren’t super strict- it’s all about having fun. That being said, no one bidding to keep a beard has ever won the bid-fyi.
If you have a glorious mustache and you reallllllly only want to shave your beard- we are cool with that, too. We’ve shaved mutton chops and fu manchus onto some participants- it gets…weirder as the night goes on.
Winning bidders can pay cash, check, or credit to the event cashier the night of the event.
In addition to attendants being able to bid on beards and shave them, there is also a tricky tray, beer and drink specials, raffles, and a barber tent outside, and much more- all the proceeds from the afore mentioned benefit the cause.
If you want to jumpstart your fundraising before you take the stage- you can setup a donation page that directly goes to the Cancer Support Community. Please let us know if you’d like to do so and we will get you in touch with Jenn at CSC.
The Why:
Ten years ago, Sarah Trimmer was facing her second bout of breast cancer. Rather than shave her head alone, she called Steve Flowers, owner of Suddenly Samantha salon and asked if she could hold a “head shaving fundraiser” at his salon. He agreed.
$2500 was raised that night for the Cancer Support Community of the Greater Lehigh Valley, an organization near and dear to Sarah’s heart, having survived breast cancer twice and losing both parents to cancer.
The following year, Sarah’s hair had grown back and she didn’t really want to shave it again (haha). Steve had the idea to get bearded volunteers to shave instead and the fundraiser was born.
To date, Beards for Breasts events have raised over $60,000.00 for CSCGLV.
Please reach out with any questions and THANK YOU, once again, from the bottom of our hearts (and beards).
