10 Ways I’ve Grown Membership & Engagement in My Community (And You Can Too)
Let’s be real — building a business, a brand, and a community takes more than a great idea. It takes heart, consistency, and a whole lot of relationship-building. I’ve been at this for a while now, and growing membership and engagement in both of my organizations hasn’t come by accident. It came through intentional strategy and always leading with purpose.
So, here are 10 ways I’ve grown membership and increased engagement — and how you can apply them to your own business or organization:
1. Start With the ‘Why’ — Not the ‘What’
People don’t just want to join a group; they want to belong to a mission. I always lead with our “why” — empowering women entrepreneurs to thrive. When people understand your purpose, they’ll want to be part of your journey.
2. Offer Real Value
Whether it’s a workshop, networking event, podcast, or free resource, give before you ask. I constantly ask myself: “What can we provide that will move someone’s business forward today?”
3. Show Up Consistently
No one builds community by showing up once and disappearing. I’m talking newsletters, events, social media — even if it’s a short check-in. Consistency builds trust. People need to know you’re in it for the long haul.
4. Make It Personal
I greet new members by name. I follow up. I DM them just to say, “Hey, how’s that business idea coming?” This isn’t just networking — it’s relationship building.
5. Use Storytelling Over Selling
You want engagement? Tell your story — and tell theirs. Highlight member wins, celebrate milestones, and show the real people behind the brands. People connect with people.
6. Create Space for Others to Shine
I’ve made it a priority to give my platform to others — guest speakers, member spotlights, and opportunities to lead. When people feel seen and heard, they stay engaged.
7. Make Feedback a Two-Way Street
I regularly ask our members, “What do you need? What’s working? What’s not?” Their input shapes our programs. It’s not about me — it’s about us.
8. Collaborate With Purpose
Strategic partnerships have opened so many doors. Whether it’s co-hosting an event or launching a new initiative, teaming up with like-minded businesses expands reach and energy.
9. Keep Evolving
What worked three years ago may not work today. We’ve added digital events, embraced AI tools, and adjusted our communication to stay fresh and relevant. Growth requires adaptability.
10. Lead With Heart
At the end of the day, I lead with integrity, passion, and authenticity. People can feel that. And when they do, they won’t just join — they’ll stick around and bring others with them.
Growing membership and engagement isn’t about flashy tactics — it’s about showing up, serving with purpose, and building meaningful relationships. That’s what I’ve done, and that’s what I’ll continue to do.
