Healthy 4th of July Treats: HBD America!

As professionals, we often juggle busy schedules, but celebrating with friends and family at a holiday gathering, such as the 4th of July, doesn’t have to throw us completely off track. Keep reading for healthy treats and mocktails that are simple and refreshing, leaving you feeling rested and ready for the upcoming workweek. Here are some easy ideas to keep your festivities delicious and nutritious:

1. Fruit Flag Platter

Create a patriotic display using blueberries, strawberries, and banana slices. Arrange them into a flag pattern for a visually appealing and healthy snack. The fiber in fruit balances the sugar, versus a cake or cookie, by slowing down digestion and reducing blood sugar fluctuations.

2. Red, White, and Blue Popsicles

Blend strawberries, Greek yogurt, and blueberries separately. Layer them in molds to freeze for a cool treat that’s both festive and refreshing. Plain Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein (15-20 grams per serving) and is a great substitute for mayonnaise or sour cream.

3. Watermelon and Feta Skewers

Combine watermelon cubes with feta cheese and fresh mint leaves on skewers for a delightful mix of sweet and savory flavors.  Watermelon is just coming into season in Pennsylvania, but keep on the lookout for nutrient-packed and sweet melons through September.

4. Patriotic Mocktails

  • Berry Sparkler: Mix sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice and garnish with fresh berries. Check for added sugars; Opt for organic 100% juice versus juice cocktail and seltzer versus tonic.
  • Cucumber Cooler: Combine cucumber slices, mint leaves, and lime juice in sparkling water for a refreshing twist. If you like to garden as I do, you might have fresh produce to make this drink! Cucumbers are packed with water and provide ample hydration.

5. Healthy Swaps

  • Grilled Veggies Over Chips: Opt for grilled vegetables instead of chips to pair with your favorite dip. Choose hardy, in-season vegetables, like peppers, tomatoes, and squash, for a nutrient-dense and low-calorie snack.
  • Whole Grain Buns: Use whole grain buns for burgers to add a nutritious element to traditional BBQ fare or skip the bun altogether.

Healthy swaps allow you to enjoy your favorite holiday foods without compromising your health goals. By choosing nutrient-rich options (low-calorie foods with a ton of nutritional value), you can indulge while keeping your energy levels up. Check out a few recipes HERE. If you overindulge, don’t worry, it happens to all of us. Focus on getting back to your routine with balanced meals and plenty of water. Alcohol can stay in our systems, affecting metabolism for up to 72 hours, so keep flushing your body with plain water.  Remember, one day of celebration won’t derail your progress.

Try to incorporate a quick workout or a brisk walk before your picnic to keep active. Enjoy the day with family and friends, knowing you’re making choices that nourish your body and soul.

Enjoy a festive, flavorful, and balanced 4th of July!
