Holiday Sanity 101: Your Body Knows What It Needs

Last year, my kitten decided that artificial Christmas trees were the perfect napping spot. So she did what any self-respecting feline would do: she laid down directly in the middle of it. The lights were amiss, ornaments on the ground, and don’t get me started on the tree skirt. I spent December 15th disassembling a tree, sweeping needles, and accepting that the holidays weren’t going to look like the Instagram version I’d imagined.

This year, she’s evolved. Now she’s drinking the tree water, knocking down ornaments one by one like she’s on some sort of mission, and napping under the tree skirt. It’s chaos. But here’s the thing: the tree is still standing. Progress.

That’s basically the entire holiday season in a nutshell, isn’t it?

The Real Holiday Survival Secret

Between parties, family obligations, work deadlines, and keeping actual humans alive, the holidays can feel like you’re balancing too many things at once. And when you’re stretched thin, the first things to go are usually the things that matter most: sleep, nutrition, and honoring what your body actually needs.

As a pharmacist and nutrition coach, I’ve seen people power through December on fumes and caffeine, only to crash on January 1st. But here’s what I’ve learned: your body is smarter than your holiday to-do list.

Listen to Your Body

If you’re tired, take a nap. Not after you finish three more tasks. Not after you return one more email. NOW. A 20-minute rest does more for your immune system than pretending you’re a holiday superhero. Your body isn’t being lazy; it’s asking for fuel to keep going.

If you don’t want to attend the party, don’t go. This sounds simple, but I know it’s not. There’s guilt, obligation, and the worry that people will think you’re unfriendly. Here’s the truth: showing up exhausted and resentful helps no one. Declining with kindness is a gift to yourself and everyone around you.

If you prefer water or a mocktail, set aside the booze. Full stop without explanation. Your liver will thank you, your sleep quality will improve, and you won’t wake up dehydrated and regretting decisions made at 10 p.m. You’re not missing out; you’re making a choice that serves you.

The Nutrition Reality Check

Eating well during the holidays doesn’t mean restriction, it means consistency. When solid meals feel chaotic, having whole food nutrition on hand makes a real difference. I keep Juice Plus+ capsules in my bag, at my desk, and on my nightstand because sometimes that’s the easiest way to ensure I’m getting the nutrients my body needs, when my routine is upside down. Let me be clear though, I take my Juice Plus+ EVERY day, regardless of the time of year.

Here’s what happens when you skip produce for weeks: your energy dips, your skin gets dull, your digestion suffers, and your immune system takes the hit right when you’re around everyone’s germs. A few capsules give you 30+ fruits and vegetables, zero prep. It’s not a replacement for real food, it’s a practical tool that bridges the gap when life gets messy.

Pair that with staying hydrated (yes, water beats eggnog and coffee), getting enough protein to keep you stable, and actually eating breakfast so you don’t show up to parties starving. These aren’t complicated moves. They’re just consistent ones.

The Holiday Bottom Line

Your December doesn’t have to look perfect. My Christmas tree is going to get messed up again, and there are sooo many needles already since we splurged on a real tree this year. Your plate might have more cookies than vegetables on it. You might say no to three invitations. You might nap at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday.

That’s not failure, it’s wisdom.

Listen to your body. It knows exactly what it needs to make it through the holidays with your sanity intact and your health protected. And if your cat decides to destroy the decorations in the process, well, at least you’re not alone in the chaos.

You’ve got this.

Happy Holidays!
