Igniting a Creative Spark in Leadership

Not long ago, I was preparing a presentation and staring at a blank screen, stuck. My to-do list was long, and my creativity felt nonexistent. Instead of pushing harder, I grabbed a marker and started doodling. Within minutes, the ideas flowed again. That little Pocket Pause™ reminded me how essential it is to give creativity space to breathe.

As leaders, we often think productivity means pressing forward nonstop. But real progress comes when we, and our teams – pause, reset, and spark new ideas.

Why Creativity Matters in Leadership

Creativity isn’t just about art, it’s about problem-solving, perspective-shifting, and building stronger connections. Studies show creative activity boosts mental sharpness, resilience, and even longevity. For leaders, it’s not optional. Encouraging creative thinking opens the door to innovation, engagement, and workplaces people want to be part of.

The Hidden Zappers of Well-Being

But creativity can’t thrive if energy is drained. Some common “zappers” include:

  • Being sedentary
  • Excessive screen time and scrolling
  • Overextending yourself
  • Isolation or lack of connection
  • Negativity in people, places, or culture

Strong leadership means recognizing these patterns, in ourselves and in our organizations, and creating environments where well-being supports creativity.

The Power of the Pocket Pause™

One of the simplest leadership tools is the intentional pause. I call them Pocket Pauses™: moments to reflect, breathe, or step back before reacting. Pauses create margin, and margin fuels creativity. Just as fire needs oxygen, leaders and teams need space to think and innovate. Modeling this practice shows that rest isn’t weakness – it’s wisdom.

Leading with a Creative Spark

Want to spark creativity in your leadership? Start small:

  • Brainstorm without judgment
  • Reframe old problems in new ways
  • Encourage curiosity and imagination
  • Try simple resets like journaling, sketching, or mindful walks

The best leaders aren’t just problem-solvers, they’re possibility creators.
