Job Search Strategy: Letters of Interest

Job searching can be quite frustrating, especially when you haven’t seen any job postings for the position you would like. However, there is a secret weapon you can try – it’s called a “Letter of Interest.”

Unlike a cover letter written for a specific job posting, a Letter of Interest enables you to proactively introduce yourself to an employer and showcase your skills and qualifications, even when there isn’t a position currently posted. Maybe you just read an article about a company whose mission and values align well with yours, or you just learned an established business is opening a new office near you. You may even have an inside scoop on a role that will be posted within the next few months. A Letter of Interest works well to get your name in front of the hiring team!

Research the name of the recruiter or HR manager and address your letter directly to them. In the first paragraph of your Letter of Interest, introduce yourself, indicate your excitement about the company, and explain why you admire its goods or services. In the second paragraph, include your relevant skills and qualifications; don’t be afraid to brag about your past results or accomplishments in the workplace. In the last paragraph, explain why a job with this employer seems like the ideal fit, share your excitement about potential next steps, and express appreciation for their time.

Don’t wait for the perfect job posting to appear. A Letter of Interest enables you to reach out proactively to employers who inspire you. By showcasing your enthusiasm, highlighting your relevant skills, and

demonstrating your alignment with their mission, you can make a lasting impression, even before a position becomes available!
