Preparing For a Potential Lay-Off Before It Happens to You, By: Shelley Maley, PHR, GCDF

Are you ready?

According to a December, 2023 survey conducted by ResumeBuilder, 44% of employers anticipated laying off employees in 2024. In fact, my brother was among those statistics. He had been notified earlier this year that his 30-year programming career with U.S. Steel was coming to a close - his job had been outsourced to Accenture.

Statistics indicate that approximately 1.5 million employees in the U.S. are laid off each month. Sadly, layoff predictions for 2025 don’t look very promising either. Companies in all industries will continue to face difficult decisions regarding their workforce. With technological advances (such as AI and automation technology), economic challenges, and changing market demands, many employers are faced with an unfortunate reality – lay-offs are essential to their survival.
So again I ask...

Are you ready?

Here’s a list of items to prepare BEFORE the possibility of a lay-off:

-Is your resume updated and ready to go?

-Have you been networking and cultivating those relationships?

-Is your LinkedIn profile current and optimized with all the right keywords?

-Are you demonstrating a growth mindset through upskilling and reskilling?
-Do you have a portfolio showcasing your recent workplace accomplishments?

-Do you have a current list of references to provide to an employer during interviews?

-Have you stayed up to date on news and technology related to your employer and your current industry?

-Are you maintaining copies of all performance reviews along with a list of your most notable accomplishments?

If you said no to any of these questions, it's time to get your ducks in a row…

Just in case.

If you or a friend/family member needs help with any of these action items, give me a call!
