The Gut-Skin Axis

(a short blog about WTF this means)

Y’all know I LOVE to talk about gut health, whole food, and Juice Plus.  But what does gut health really mean, and why am I making it more complicated by talking about the gut-skin axis?  Gut health describes how well the inside of our digestive tract – the organs that digest and absorb our food and liquids – is working and the balance of the bacteria inside. When our gut is healthy, we feel good because our body absorbs nutrients better, food breaks down well, and the bad bugs are kept out.

So how are the gut and skin connected?  Our skin is the body’s biggest organ and defense mechanism, protecting us from all kinds of cooties (scientific terms: mechanical, microbial, chemical, and allergenic insults). Our digestive tract does the same, and when the bacteria contained inside it, the gut microbiome, is happy, balanced, and healthy, this is reflected on our skin. When a gut is out of balance, or dysbiosis, our skin mirrors what is going on inside and may show external signs. To build healthy, clear, glowing skin, your body needs specific nutrients: antioxidants, healthy fats, proteins, and a healthy gut.

Common skin conditions reflective of poor gut health:

  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Urticaria (itching)
  • Rosacea (red skin)
  • Dull skin tone
  • Dandruff

Just like you wouldn’t clean only the outside of your food dishes, you can’t simply keep your skin clean with potions, lotions, and peels without focusing on what’s happening inside. What you’re putting in your body shows up on your skin; it’s that simple. For me, this is where Juice Plus comes in. Here are three products that work together (and a shopping link to get them today!):

  1. Essential Capsules (the Trio): A foundation to bridge the gap with 30 fruits, vegetables, and berries. A full day of produce in 3 little capsules. When your body has the nutrients it needs, your skin can start changing within weeks.
  2. SuperBiome (Pre/Probiotics): This is about gut health. A healthy microbiome means better nutrient absorption and less inflammation. That equals clearer, calmer skin with science, not magic!
  3. Complete Shakes: A foundational shake with whole-food-based protein and nutrients, a full amino acid profile, and balanced sugars. It’s an easy way to start your day with real nutrition that your skin needs to regenerate healthy, glowing cells.
