The Real Deal about Sitting Down for Dinner

Life is chaotic and fast and some of you reading this have convinced yourselves you barely have time to eat, let alone sit down and eat.

Take a deep breath.

No, seriously, take a deep breath.

Whether you’re sitting alone with your phone or gathered around the table with your family, making time to sit down for a meal is one of the simplest (and most underrated) ways to feel grounded and connected in this wild world.

Eating alone?

Sit back and savor your food, maybe even treat yourself to something amazing every now and again. Take some time to reflect on your day and find a little spot of peace. Breathe.

Eating with Family?

Drop those phones please! Spend this time to connect, share about your day, ask questions, tell a funny story, and enjoy a real conversations. Don’t forget to share the clean up (more bonding)!

Why Sitting Down for Dinner Matters

Here are five powerful reasons to reclaim the dinner table:

  • It’s meditative – Use meal time as a grounding, and enjoyable experience
  • Improved digestion –  Eat slow and savor the meal
  • Connection – Create conversations and improve relationships
  • Mindful eating – Versus scrolling or watching TV, helps keep calories in check
  • Smarter Kids – Research shows kids who eat with their families have improved academic scores

Food is meant to be savored with its aromas, different textures, and flavor profiles.   I am blessed to have grown up with a family who enjoys cooking, passing family recipes down through generarions (do not ask for my Grammy Walker’s pierogi recipe, you won’t get it and they’ll never taste as good!), and bonding over family time.

But What If You’re Not a Gourmet Chef?

Then you prep smart or keep it simple. Here are five reasons meal prepping can save your sanity:

  • Fewer decisions – After a long day, nobody wants to ask, “What’s for dinner?”
  • Save money – Planning meals with a grocery list helps you skip the takeout and stick to your budget.
  • Eat healthier – Chop, wash, and prep real food, your body will thank you.
  • Better time management – Designate 1–2 days a week to prep. Mornings are hard enough!
  • Stay consistent – With less stress, you’re more likely to stick to your health goals.
