What I Know About Careers

Shelley Maley Shares

Over the past ten years as a Career Coach — and through my five different careers in three industries — I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside professionals who are navigating some of life’s biggest decisions. And along the way, I’ve gathered some truths that aren’t just theories or motivational quotes… they’re realities I’ve seen play out over and over again, both in my clients’ journeys and my own.

Here’s what I know for certain about careers:

  • If you work 40 hours a week until retirement, you’ll spend about 90,000 hours of your life working. Choose wisely.
  • A toxic employer does not deserve you. Ever.
  • It’s not just “okay” to have a career unrelated to your degree — it’s normal.
  • If you’re unhappy in your career today, chances are you’ll still be unhappy a year from now (unless you take action).
  • When your personal values don’t align with your employer’s, happiness will be elusive.
  • Burnout is not a badge of honor. It’s dangerous, exhausting, and in the long run, it may be life-threatening.
  • Only about 50% of Americans feel satisfied with their careers. Don’t settle for being in the unhappy half.
  • Working in a role that doesn’t use your strengths, skills, or interests is draining — no matter how impressive the paycheck might look.
  • Building your career around other people’s expectations (parents, spouse, etc.) almost always leads to regret.

At the end of the day, here’s what I want YOU to know: you deserve a career that is both rewarding and enjoyable. Not perfect, not stress-free, but one that feels aligned with who you are, permits you to have work-life balance, and allows you to thrive, and not just survive.

If you’re reading this and nodding your head because one (or all) of these truths hits close to home, take that as your nudge. Your career is too big of a life investment to leave on autopilot. The best time to start building a career that fits you? Today.
