When Voices Go Quiet: What Creativity Teaches Us About Connection at Work

She sat in the back of the room, shoulders tense, eyes down. The meeting wasn’t about policies or procedures this time,  it was about the people in the room. Yet still, she couldn’t bring herself to speak.

Around her, others filled the air with their words, some confidently, some nervously, some simply because silence makes them uncomfortable. And while the conversation carried on, her perspective, her ideas, her creativity stayed locked inside.

If you’ve ever been part of a team like this, you know the weight of those unspoken words. A company can have brilliant talent, seasoned professionals, and eager new recruits, but if voices go unheard, the organization runs at half its potential.

What creativity has to do with it

When people hear “creativity,” they often think of paintbrushes or poetry. But in reality, creativity is about finding new ways to express ourselves, connect with others, and solve problems.

Here’s the secret: creativity lowers the barrier to participation.

  • A doodle on a page can break the ice for someone who struggles to speak up.
  • A storytelling prompt can make it safe to share experiences without fear of judgment.
  • A playful group activity can level the field between seasoned employees and new hires.

Creativity doesn’t demand perfection –  it invites participation. And when participation grows, so does connection.

Opening the door to creativity

So the next time you notice silence in the room, don’t push harder for answers. Instead, open the door to creativity.

Consider something as simple as a game night where the team plays charades or Pictionary. In the moment, it feels lighthearted and fun. But beneath the laughter, people are practicing quick thinking, non-verbal communication, and the courage to put themselves out there.

Or imagine a creative challenge like building a “treat masterpiece” together from a pile of random snacks. It might look like a silly exercise, but what actually unfolds is collaboration, problem-solving, and the ability to hear and integrate each person’s ideas.

Sometimes, in the middle of an activity like this, someone suddenly connects the dots. They recognize that what just happened in a playful setting mirrors the very challenges they face in the workplace. That’s where creativity proves its real value.

The point

At its heart, creativity is not about art,  it’s about access. It provides access to our own ideas, access to one another, and access to possibilities we didn’t see before.

When a workplace embraces creativity as part of its culture, it shifts from being a place where a few voices dominate the conversation to a place where everyone contributes, learns, and grows together.

What would change in your team if every voice felt safe, and inspired – to be heard?

How I can help

These kinds of creative experiences don’t have to be complicated. They can be woven into an afternoon workshop or expanded into a full retreat. This is the work I do – facilitating engaging, interactive team-building experiences that help people find their voices, strengthen their connections, and unlock their potential.

If your team is ready to move from quiet hesitation to confident collaboration, I’d love to help create that space.
