Your Resume and AI

Shelley Maley Shares

Artificial intelligence is here to stay. We are using it for all sorts of things, such as planning our weekly meals or creating a monthly budget. There’s no doubt it makes life easier, and it saves us a great deal of time and effort. However, there’s a trend I’ve been seeing lately, and I want to call attention to it.

Job seekers are using AI to create their cover letters and resumes more frequently. While I admit that both tasks can be overwhelming, let’s talk about the downsides to relying on AI for such important documents.

Inaccuracy and misrepresentation Recruiters are routinely noticing inconsistencies between what is represented on these AI-generated resumes vs. a candidate’s LinkedIn profile or interview responses. This may appear as dishonesty or fraud, which undermines their trust in the candidate.

Generic, impersonal, and obvious Hiring managers and recruiters note that AI-generated cover letters and resumes are often robotic and impersonal. When your resume lacks that “real” human voice, it’s an automatic turn-off to the hiring team. Trust me, anyone who frequently reviews cover letters and resumes is probably able to spot an AI-generated document.

Higher risk of rejection Many people who hire consider AI-generated resumes and cover letters as unacceptable or “cheating”. Are you willing to risk your reputation and potential job opportunities?

Poor personalization and weak storytelling Hiring teams tell us that AI-generated resumes underdeliver on concrete, role-specific examples and genuine storytelling. In fact, AI resumes blur together, making it much harder for you to stand out among other applicants.

Fairness concerns AI-generated application materials may mask legitimate credentials and make it harder to evaluate your true skills, which undermines fair, skills-based hiring decisions.

Many recruiters and hiring managers are not opposed to AI entirely, but they do warn job seekers about over-relying on it for resumes and cover letters. While it’s okay to use AI for brainstorming, it’s best to edit your cover letter and resume to ensure they still sound authentic and personal.
